Food and Healthy Skin: What to Eat to Have that Glowing Look
Saturday, March 28, 2009
Having a clear, healthy skin greatly improves our looks. Whether we look radiant or dull usually depends on the condition of our skin. The healthier our skin is, the more glowing we are. The drier or rougher our skin is, the duller we seem to be.
Food has a lot to do with the state of our skin and overall health. To have an idea of what food can help give you that glowing, radiant look, a partial list is provided.
1. Food rich in vitamin A. Studies have found that people who suffer from acne have lower vitamin A levels in their bodies than those who have healthy skin. Vitamin A contains retinoids, a familiar term among those who use acne medications since these bioactive compounds are often part of the formula for curing pimples. Some of the foods rich in vitamin A are liver; beef; yellow, orange and red fruits and vegetables such as carrots, apples, pumpkins and tomatoes. Dairy products are also rich in vitamin A, although the processed ones should be taken in moderation since they can worsen existing zits if consumed in vast quantities.
2. Food rich in vitamin E. Vitamin E is known for its ability to repair and maintain the health of your cells, including those in the skin, the liver and the eyes. Foods that are rich in this vitamin include wheat and oats, green vegetables, egg, nuts and wheat germ.
3. Food rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants are not called anti-aging elements for nothing. They work by neutralizing free radicals which are often known as destructive compounds. Good sources of antioxidants include food rich in vitamin E; food rich in vitamin C such as citrus fruits; raspberry, blueberry and almost all kinds of edible berries; hot peppers; yogurt; and the allium group that includes garlic and onion.
4. Vegetables and fruits. Almost all of them are already included in the aforementioned categories, but the rest that have yet to be mentioned should also be part of your diet if you want to have a healthy skin. The fact that most fruits and vegetables like orange, cabbage and papaya are used as ingredients in most home-made acne remedies should tell you their importance when it comes to keeping our skin healthy.
Eating right is one of the keys to having a healthy skin. The saying that "you are what you eat" has never been truer when it comes to the state of our skin.
