The skin is categorized into five major types; these are normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive. Acne treatments and maintenance formulas vary from one type to another. To know what suits your type of skin best, read on.
1. Normal skin. This is the type that does not suffer from pimples as often as the other types, although an occasional bump might appear, particularly with women who are about to have their monthly period. The best thing to do in cases like these is to just ignore it, don't touch or squeeze the zit and just keep your face clean at all times.
2. Oily skin. The most prone to acne is oily skin. This type of skin must be washed at least twice a day to keep dirt from accumulating and making the condition worse. Antibacterial soap and facial washes that have the correct pH balance is necessary to control pimples in oily skin. The use of astringent is also advisable to lessen the oil. Contrary to some claims, moisturizer is still needed for oily skin. An oil-free moisturizer is what's best for this type.
3. Dry skin. People with dry skin should watch out for aging signs. This is the type that tends to get wrinkles earlier that other types. It is also more prone to all sorts of skin problems, not just acne. The best way to care for dry skin is to use rich moisturizers, particularly during the night before going to bed. Creamy facial washes should also be used and if you are to go out into the sun, the use of sunscreen is a must.
4. Combination skin. Arguably the hardest to care for since most of the time, part of your face will be oily, while the rest will be dry. The most common type of combination skin is when the T-zone (forehead, nose and chin areas) is oily and the cheeks are dry. In cases like these, a foaming facial wash should be used to keep the face clean, The T zone should be dabbed with astringent every night, while the dry areas should be moisturized.
5. Sensitive skin. When you suffer easily from irritation and itching, then you have sensitive skin. Avoid using cosmetics and products with too much chemicals. A hypo-allergenic facial wash would be appropriate for this kind of skin. Moisturizers should also be used, but choose those that are not perfumed or heavy on the chemicals.
Knowing what type your skin is can help you find a more effective cure to common skin problems, including acne. Before buying all those supplies, get a patch test or consult your dermatologist.
