Treatment Methods for Scars Caused by Acne

Acne, particularly the most developed type, can leave scars that can take their toll on our self-esteem. Although prevention is still the best way to make sure that you don't suffer from marks left by acne, there are situations when you just cannot avoid this unfortunate experience. But at this time, even scars can be eradicated by a number of simple procedures. Thanks to technology, a host of solutions are now available so we don't need to remain marked and scarred for the rest of our lives.

1. Laser treatment. This is the most common procedure when it comes to eliminating acne scars. Laser surgery functions by burning away the damaged tissue or reshaping it so that it appears flat and on level with the normal skin. Different types of lasers can be used with this procedure depending on what type of scar is being dealt with.

2. Skin-grafts. This method entails the taking of the skin from one part of the body and transferring it to the scar that needs to be cured. This procedure is often used on scars that have left crater-like holes on the skin.

3. Punch excision. It involves the excision or the removal of the scar down to the subcutaneous fat layer. The space that will be left by the procedure is either sutured or skin-grafted, depending on its depth.

4. Dermabrasion. This procedure removes the surface of the skin and alters the contour of the scar. The purpose is to reduce the depth of scars or eliminate altogether those that are not too deep or are only superficial. This method, though, is not highly recommended for dark-skinned people because it can cause changes in skin color.

5. Collagen. The method entails the injection of collagen under the skin to fill out the carved-out spaces left by deep scars and smooth out the surface of the skin to give it the normal look. This procedure is good for superficial and soft scars, but is not recommended for keloids.

Scars from acne are not impossible to treat anymore. A number of procedures are available, but a detailed discussion with a skin expert is necessary to determine whether you need to undergo any of these methods and whether your type of scar can really be helped using these procedures.
