Examining the Connection Between Diet and Acne

Saturday, March 28, 2009

Does our diet influence our chances of getting acne? Are there foods that cause pimples? Let's take a look at what we need and what we should avoid.

What we should avoid
1. Milk and products containing milk. Some studies have found a certain association between the consumption of milk and the development of acne. Although this has yet to be absolutely proven, the belief was that the hormones contained in milk cause acne to develop. Among this group of foods that are labeled as acne-causing suspects are cheese, skimmed milk and other dairy products.

2. Chocolates. Chocolate in itself does not cause acne, but too much consumption of this confectionery when you are already prone to acne can worsen the condition. The theory behind the association between chocolates and acne is the ability of the former to raise blood sugar levels, which in turn, is hypothesized to be an aggravating factor for pimples.

3. Processed foods. These often come in the form of the so-called junk foods. According to various studies, processed foods produce more glucose which is then converted into fat that can cause the clogging of the skin pores. Although it has yet to be proven as a culprit, minimizing the intake of such meals might help.

What we need
1. Food rich in vitamin A. Some research studies have shown that people who suffer from severe pimples have lower vitamin A levels in their bodies that those who do not have acne problems. The best sources of vitamin A are liver, potatoes and egg.

2. Food rich in vitamin E. This partially explains why there are lots of vitamin E supplements marketed as promoters of skin health. Sources rich in vitamin E include tomatoes, wheat germ and nuts.

3. Vegetables and fruits. Whatever color and whatever shape they take; these are standard requirements for keeping a healthy skin and a healthy body.

Although food has not been proven to cause acne, excessive consumption of some and minimal consumption of others might contribute to the development of this skin condition. The best thing to do is to keep a balanced diet and try to avoid having too much of what's bad for you.
