Adult Acne: Why Some Have It and Some Don\'t
Saturday, March 28, 2009
Some people leave their pimples behind when they get past their teenage years, but some are dogged by this skin condition until they are in their 30s and even in their 40s. But what causes acne? Why do some of us are able to get rid of it and why some still suffer from it in their adult lives? Here are some answers.
What causes acne?
Acne is primarily caused by the skin's excessive production of oil. This can cause the pores to get blocked, leaving a place for bacteria to thrive and pimples to breakout. The excessive production of oil is attributed to less-than-normal hormonal activity; hence teenagers are the most prone to it. Women also suffer from it a few days before their period; again, because of hormones.
Why some have it and some don't
There really is no fool-proof answer to this one, but there are studies that have identified some suspect factors. First, it has been said that if it runs in the family, then you're in danger. Acne has not been proven to be hereditary, but your parents' skin type might be one of the things that you will inherit from them; and there are just some skin types that are more prone to acne than others.
And speaking of skin type, if you have oily skin, then your chances of developing zits are higher than those who have normal skin. Stress has also been blamed for acne breakouts. A number of surveys have shown that women who occupy higher positions in their careers, and who have therefore more responsibilities, are more prone to pimples than others; leading some skin experts to speculate that stress, although not particularly a cause, might be an aggravating factor.
Lifestyle is another factor. The more you drink and smoke, the more likely that you will suffer from breakouts. It all comes down to keeping a healthy body, which in turn, will help you keep your skin healthy. Excessive exposure to the sun is also a culprit; and so is excessive cosmetic use.
What to doIt is obvious that some of these factors are just beyond our control, but it doesn't mean that there is nothing we can do. Just make sure that you keep your skin clean and avoid all the identified culprits if you could.
