Ways to Avoid Acne

Saturday, March 28, 2009

Acne afflicts 90% of the world’s population at some time in their lives, particularly those under the age of 24. With a few precautions, however, it can be mostly avoided.

Acne is caused by the clogging of hair follicles by dead skin, dirt, pollution and natural skin oils. By keeping your face clean, you can avoid most of these causes. A good antibacterial cleanser twice a day goes a long way towards avoiding acne by destroying the natural bacteria that causes the infections leading to acne.

Avoiding makeup will also help prevent acne. If you must use makeup, get the hypoallergenic water-based kind. There really isn’t much need for makeup unless you need to even out your skin tone and flaws that are obvious to you will likely be unnoticeable to others.

A good diet is essential to preventing and controlling acne. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding carbonated beverages and eating a balanced diet with an emphasis on colorful fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants will keep your body healthy and functioning as it should. In turn, your acid and alkaline levels (pH) will be kept at healthy levels and control the oil glands that encourage acne. High fiber, low-fat diets are also very beneficial in keeping skin healthy and free of blemishes.

If you perspire a lot at your job or when participating in sports, it’s important to wipe your face frequently and wash it with a gentle soap after you’re done. Sweat tends to drip down the line of the jaw, helping to infect hair follicles and resulting in acne skin infection. Long hair brushing the skin and transferring hair oils to the pores is also a chief cause of acne, especially in the summer when perspiration combines with hair oils to clog the hair follicles.

Moisturizer is essential in combating acne, sun, weather damage and aging. Be sure that it’s an oil-free formula and apply at night if at no other time. An oil-free moisturizer is your skin’s best friend in preventing acne and staying healthy.

It’s not time-consuming or difficult to prevent most cases of acne. Your reward, aside from avoiding acne, will be healthy skin that stays young and glowing as long as you continue to care for it.
