Different Kinds of Acne Treatment for Different Types of Acne

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Acne is a common ailment, one suffered by a great many of our teenagers and pregnant women... and a small percentage of us who are unfortunate enough to bring the condition with them to old age! If you're suffering from acne for the first time, don't panic! Your doctor ought to be able to prescribe excellent acne treatment that will solve your acne problem.

As soon as you feel that your acne problem has gone out of control, seeing a doctor should be your first line of defense. It's not a given that home remedies will work for you, because there are different kinds of acne and not all home remedies - even traditional herbal cures - are tried and tested as acne treatment. Some are, however. The trick is really in learning what kind of acne you have and how to cure it.

So what are the different kinds of acne? Only your doctor can say for sure what method would work best for solving your acne problem, but it is always good to have a better idea of what your skin is going through. Do this before you seek treatment!

Acne comes in stages. If not treated on time, the initial (non-inflammatory) stages worsen to inflammatory ones. The non-inflammatory stages are referred to as comedonal acne, and the visible signs are broken down into blackheads (open comedo) and whiteheads (closed comedo). Acne vulgaris occurs when both blackheads and whiteheads are present, and it is the most common type of acne there is. Pustules are also considered non-inflammatory: this just refers to pimples filled with yellowish pus. Papules, however, may already be classified as "mildly inflamed" - these pimples are already so reddish, you can no longer see the pus underneath the skin.

More serious cases of acne are called other names: nodules and cystic acne among them. Nodules appear similar to pimples, but are vastly more painful and run deeper into the skin. Acne conglobata and acne fulminans are considered the worst cases of nodular acne, and they almost always affect men. Cystic acne on the other hand occurs when ordinary pustules are aggravated by popping or abrasion, which cause skin infections. You may not know exactly what type of acne you have - and thus the kind of acne treatment you should seek - until you see a doctor.
