Benzoyl Peroxide and acne: a great way to reduce inflammation

Tuesday, March 24, 2009

Benzoyl peroxide is one of the most potent remedies for acne. It reduces the redness of pimples and pustules, reduces inflammation and prevents bacterial infection. It is particularly effective in treating mild to moderate acne.

Benzoyl Peroxide is available as lotions, creams, bars and gels, and can be purchased over the counter. However, all these products should be used externally only. In fact, it is best to go in for products that suit your skin tone and texture. For instance, you can use a Benzoyl Peroxide based exfoliator to keep your skin healthy or use a gel based application if you have an oily skin.

Benzoyl peroxide is a strong antiseptic and its application over the inflamed region kills most of the skin bacteria. It is deadly for yeast infections too. Its strong oxidizing properties result in quick drying of the sebum and other fluids that are present in pimples and pustules. You can also be assured of no secondary microbial infections. A big advantage of using Benzoyl Peroxide is that chances of scarring are minimal.

Even though Benzoyl Peroxide is bactericidal in nature its regular application does not result in the development of resistance against the antiseptic in bacterial species.

If you use Benzoyl Peroxide in the soap form then you should wash your face at least two to three times a day. But you should not scrub your face. Instead, it is better to use creams and lotions after taking a bath to keep the skin smooth. Heavy cosmetics or exposure to harsh sunlight must definitely be avoided during this period as this irritates the skin.

Those using Benzoyl Peroxide may notice side effects like dryness of the skin, mild redness and flaking of skin. They can be ignored if they are minimal. But if they persist then you should seek medical help. The same is advisable if you notice blistering, rashes or increase in dryness and redness of the skin.

Do not expect instant results. It is likely that you will see a difference after 4-6 weeks of use. Do not stop once you start noticing an improvement. Continue till your face becomes completely clear. To achieve maximum benefit apply Benzoyl Peroxide over all acne prone areas in the body. The application on inflammation sites alone will provide temporary relief only.

The use of Benzoyl Peroxide is not recommended for children who are less than 12 years old. If needed it should be used only under medical supervision.
